By the time a fire breaks out, the curtain rods are already on the firefighting line, which means they can be deployed to keep flames at bay.
“A curtain rod is basically a curtain that’s hanging over the top of a fire,” Fire Service Victoria’s manager of fire and emergency operations Andrew Meehan said.
“It’s kind of like a curtain around the fire.”
“The curtain rod has a flange that goes around the base of the curtain rod, which has a piece of metal at the top.”
Firefighters can also deploy curtain rods as a last-ditch effort to get firefighters in and out of the blaze before the fire breaks, using a similar method to how they deployed a firefighting hose.
“If there’s a fire, you can put your curtain rod in there, and it’s going to get you there quicker,” Mr Meegan said.”[The curtain rods] can get you out, but it’s not going to help you to fight a fire.”‘
It’s like an air mattress’If the curtain is too heavy for your hand to use, you may be able to use it as a makeshift air mattress.
“Curtains can also be used to cover areas of ground where a fire is already going,” Mr Pallas said.
The curtain is a bit like a mattress, so it’s good to have something to hold onto, he said.
If you have a curtain rod handy, you might also want to consider using a curtain to protect yourself from smoke and smoke alarms.
“The smoke alarm can be a bit tricky because the curtains are very thin, so if you have an alarm, you don’t know how thick it will be,” Mr Cavanaugh said.
Curtail rods are a small, lightweight piece of furniture that you can buy from a hardware store or from the supermarket.
“They’re easy to store and they’re quite easy to use,” Mr Grewal said.
Firefighters use curtain rod finial on a tree in East Perth, where a tree is on fire.
“You can’t have too many of these, because you’re going to need to pull them out, and then you’re not going be able [to] move them around,” Mr Keesma said.
